Marionneau Virve

Sociologist, postdoctoral researcher

Research

I received my PhD in sociology from the University of Helsinki in 2015 and have since started a postdoc research related to the legislative and financial contexts of gambling in Europe. The international project, ‘Gambling policies in European Welfare Regimes’, is financed by the Academy of Finland and focuses on the financial cycles created by gambling, including revenue raised by governments through gambling, how this revenue is used and distributed, and the social costs of gambling for states. The international research team focuses on the contexts of France, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Italy. At the Cermes3, I conduct the study concerning France.

In my PhD thesis, ‘Socio-cultural contexts of gambling: A comparative study of Finland and France’, I focused on the cultural and institutional contexts of gambling. I am also currently co-authoring an international book related to gambling policies called ‘Gambling, science and public policy’.
