High-throughput genomics and personalized medicine:knowledge and regulations

Labex Sites contract – exploratory project (2014-2015) | Cermes3, University of Paris Est Marne La Vallée, Inserm, Labex Sites
Coordinator: Catherine Bourgain, Cermes3

This project is interested in the technology of high-throughput genomics in the context of the development of so-called personalized medicine. It focuses at the same time on studying the new research practices and clinical practices that this technology has contributed to bring about and on analyzing their impact on the current regulations of genetic testing.

The work is organized around three complementary studies:

  1. French genomics platforms in oncology. We are drawing up an ethnography of the Institut Curie (with specific follow-up of the Shiva “personalized medicine” trial) and of the Grenoble University Hospital Center, and we are following the activities of the national network of genomics platforms supported by INCa, the French National Cancer Institute.
  2. Establishment of high throughput in medical genetics in the oil countries of the Gulf, an area where the development of genetics is still limited, but where the political and economic situation makes it possible to import these technologies.
  3. Establishment of national pre-conception genetic-testing programs in Israel, offered since 2002 to the entire population based on individuals’ community origins.
